Male or female voice-over?

There are some video marketing questions that just keep coming back. One of those is: do I get a woman or a man to narrate my story? Around the office, we jokingly call our voice-over actor or actress the voice of God, so either way, make sure to get someone who can preach! Praise the Lord!

A male or female voice-over for my video: who to pick?

As for the million-dollar question of male versus female, we have a couple of things to say. First of all: let’s get a myth out of the way. Female voices are not better at selling nail polish and male voices are not more likely to sell a power drill. Research shows that people don’t find either voice more likely to be persuasive. If anything, try and switch things up for the element of surprise.

There are a few sentiments, though, that are more often attributed to men than women or vice versa. If you’re trying to convey that your product is helpful, for example, try a female voice-over. A woman’s voice tends to have a nurturing, reassuring effect. Here’s an example:

A male voice, on the other hand, comes across as more vigorous. The low and determined tones of a male voice have a way of creating urgency. If you want to light a fire under your audience’s butt, have a man talk to them. Check it out:

Apart from being more persuasive, a male voice is often considered to be more authoritative. Go with a male voice if you want to share cut-and-dry facts in, like say, a rather formal explainer video.

But then again, female voices sound more soothing and have the capacity to persuade on a more profound level. They have the power to give your product a gentle and compassionate feel. If you want your customers to truly believe in your message or product, pick a soft, warm female voice to explain it to them.

The best advice we can give you is listen to your own brand. What’s the tone of voice you want to send into the world? Make sure the voice completely fits into your company’s branding. If the narration feels natural to you, you’ve found your voice!

So once again, the most important thing is just to keep it simple.
